Breakthrough in Communication: From Conflict to Win-Win
A Simple Mindset Shift Transformed Family and Workplace Experiences
Although I’ve participated in various personal growth courses and received counselling in the past, this was my first experience with coaching. Surprisingly, this experience led to a genuine breakthrough in communication, significantly transforming my interpersonal relationships!
At first, I felt lost and wasn’t sure what topic to begin with. However, with my coach’s guidance, I started discussing my current real-life challenges. These included difficulties at work, strained relationships with my child, misunderstandings with my spouse, and communication barriers with my supervisors and subordinates.
Seeing Myself Clearly: Self-Awareness Sparks Communication Breakthrough
The coaching approach I experienced was significantly different from other growth-enhancing approaches I had encountered before.
“When I learned to pause and reflect, re-examine my thoughts, beliefs, and choices, I finally understood that real change begins with truly ‘seeing myself.’ ”

My coach didn’t provide the answers or judge what was right or wrong. Instead, through attentive listening and insightful questions, my coach guided me gently yet firmly in exploring my inner self. I began to learn how to identify problems independently, find my own answers, and determine my course of action.
The difficulties and challenges I face, whether in relationships with my spouse, children, or colleagues at work, may seem different, but they often share similar underlying causes. Through coaching, I realised that it wasn’t external things that were difficult to resolve, but rather my stubborn adherence to certain beliefs and ways of thinking that complicate things.
When I learned to pause and reflect, re-examine my thoughts, beliefs, and choices, I finally understood that real change begins with truly “seeing myself.”
Listening with Empathy: Turning Conflict into Trust and Mutual Success
One clear example is my relationship with my children. I used to think they weren’t attentive or obedient enough, which strained our relationship and communication. Through coaching, I began to view their behaviours from a different perspective. I realised that I didn’t simply need to tolerate them; I need to understand them from their point of view.
I started to use the techniques I learned during coaching to change my communication style with my children. Instead of rushing to lecture them, I made an effort to listen and understand their feelings, thoughts, and values. When they felt accepted, their attitudes softened in response.
Likewise, the conflicts I experienced with my spouse and the misunderstandings at work gradually improved once I became willing to see things from a different angle. When I was willing to take action, positive outcomes naturally followed.
Facing the Future with Awareness and Strength
This learning experience has been refreshing and profound for me. It wasn’t merely a series of coaching conversations but a journey into my inner self. Through this process, I learned to trust my ability to find a path forward. I also gained opportunities to practice honesty and courage. I will carry this awareness and strength with me in every step forward.
I’m deeply grateful to Coach Richard for his guidance and support!
