I thank God that Richard has been helping our ministry in using metrics for evaluation. I know he is a professional coach (and he uses his professional skills to help us in our evaluation), and when I heard that our LeaderImpact ministry invited him to conduct a Coaching Workshop, I signed up without any hesitation.

During the workshop, we learned the whole coaching process and had opportunities to practice coaching with one another. I could clearly see the efforts Richard put into preparing for the class, which helped us maximize our understanding of the material. I learned that coaching is working with the Holy Spirit, helping people discover where they can change, and where their blind spots are. I also learned that coaching skills can be used not only in ministry but also in many areas of my life. During our practices, I realized that I am used to telling people what to do, and this is where I need a drastic change.

After the workshop, I started to practice using coaching skills in my life; not necessarily during coaching conversations, but definitely trying to ask powerful questions. I recently had a long conversation with a pastor’s wife (who is also a good friend), during which I shared with her what I learned and actually used the skills to help her work through a bottleneck in her ministry. She shared that the conversation was very helpful! We worked on some action steps and even decided on our next coaching conversation; we were both excited! I am no longer the person who provides answers, but someone who helps another discover their own answers and then work towards change. The whole process is relaxed and yet motivates the person being coached.

Humans tend to be forgetful. Though I have attended the workshop, I need to continue practising the skills that I have learned. I have begun to apply these skills in my ministry and in church. Instead of trying to provide answers, I now try to think of good questions to ask. I realized that we are all seeking answers, and tend to expect others to provide the answers, not realizing that the answers are already within us. Everyone has potential, and we need to take responsibility for our own lives. Coaching is a beautiful tool that not only helps surface the needs and answers within us but also motivates us to act and accomplish our plans.
